Why the fireworks were not rescheduled + weekend notes

Barrhaven Canada Day needs a new team after fireworks cancellation

Barrhaven’s Canada Day fireworks were stopped by the weather. They were not rescheduled because of money.
Darrell Bartraw, President of Canada Day Barrhaven Inc., told the Bugle the 2026 celebration covered its costs — but only because organizers cancelled the fireworks instead of trying to stage them later.
“There was no shortage,” Bartraw said. “Everything was covered. If we had put off the fireworks, we would have had a shortage.”
The July 1 lightning meant the fireworks could not safely go ahead that night. The original plan was to reschedule them. But after organizers looked at the numbers, Bartraw said they decided they could not afford to.
The group’s official announcement says the cancellation, rather than postponement, was needed so organizers could recover part of the fireworks cost and meet obligations to suppliers, contractors, entertainers and service providers.
Rain also hurt the event’s revenue. Bartraw said last year’s 50/50 draw brought in about $6,000. This year, it brought in about $2,000 — a drop of roughly $4,000 on that piece alone. Games and rides that were expected to bring in money also took a hit because crowds were smaller.
“People didn’t come to the event because it was raining,” he said.
But the finances are only one side of the problem. The bigger issue now is whether a new team can take over.
Bartraw said the current executive had already decided before this year’s midway that they would not return to organize another Canada Day. He has been involved with the event for 16 years and is turning 70 this year. He said the committee is aging out of the physical and organizational workload.
“We’re getting too old, and there’s a lot of heavy lifting on the stuff that we do,” he said. “The bones just aren’t there anymore.”
That work does not end when the crowds leave. Bartraw said cleanup and teardown took four days this year, and there is still work to do, including equipment and storage questions connected to the fields.
Bartraw said he has heard from people interested in bringing the event back, and expects to meet with them in the coming weeks to explain what is actually involved.
“A lot of people say, ‘Oh yeah, I can do that,’” he said. “And then when I start telling them the list, that could change people’s minds.”
The timing matters. The official announcement says any group hoping to revive the celebration for 2027 should form a not-for-profit before September, so it can apply for Canadian Heritage funding when applications open in October.
For Barrhaven, this is the reality behind the cancelled fireworks. The storm ended the show. The lost revenue ended the reschedule. And now the future of the whole celebration depends on whether a new team is ready to take it on.

Barrhaven Farmers’ Market — Sunday, July 12, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Nepean Woods Park & Ride. The weekly market runs through October with local vendors, food, and the usual chance to bump into half the neighbourhood while “just picking up a few things.”

1. Police office hours paused at Walter Baker. Wilson Lo’s June 30 update says Ottawa Police office hours at Walter Baker Sports Centre are suspended until the end of August because of space conflicts. Residents can still call Ottawa Police for general inquiries and non-emergency concerns from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily; emergencies remain 9-1-1.
2. Household hazardous-waste depot coming to Strandherd. The next depot near Barrhaven is listed for Saturday, October 17, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Strandherd snow dump, 4061 Strandherd Drive, with entry via Dealership Drive. Check the City’s HHW page before loading the car.
3. Youth ride OC Transpo free this summer. OC Transpo says riders ages 11 to 18 can use buses, trains and Para Transpo free from July 1 through August 31 with a properly set Presto card. Kids 10 and under continue to ride free year-round.

What’s Being Built
Barnsdale Road EA remains open for comment
The Barnsdale Road Environmental Assessment is still in its online consultation window. Councillor David Hill’s office says the City is studying future improvements between Highway 416 and Prince of Wales Drive, including the possibility of widening Barnsdale to four lanes as growth continues along the south edge.
The online materials and survey are listed as open until Friday, July 10. If Barnsdale is part of your commute, school run, or weekend route, this is the week to read the options and send comments before the window closes.

In Nepean, Watt’s office says Ottawa representatives have asked the province to assess Canada Day storm damage for possible disaster-recovery assistance. Canada Day Barrhaven Inc. is also asking for new organizers if the community wants the annual celebration and fireworks revived for 2027.
Carney’s office says the Prime Minister visited the Barrhaven West Community Association’s Canada Day festival at Clarke Fields, while Diana Fox Carney attended the 75 Barrhaven Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squadron’s annual ceremonial review at Howard Darwin Centennial Arena.
At City Hall, Lo’s office says Fallowfield Road resurfacing between Greenbank Road and the railway has started. In Barrhaven West, Hill’s office is pointing residents to the Barnsdale Road EA before the July 10 deadline and the Greenbank transformer-station review period, which runs into mid-July. South Nepean riders should also check OC Transpo’s summer service changes and free-youth-fare rules.

Lo’s June 30 newsletter points to Ottawa Public Health guidance after local public-safety partners urged residents to be careful around pools, beaches, rivers and boats: do not swim alone, keep children within arm’s reach, use properly fitted life-jackets or PFDs for weaker swimmers, and call 9-1-1 when someone is in trouble.
